Ciudad Constitución

A working agricultural town, and a practical base for Magdalena Bay's gray whales.

Ciudad Constitución isn't a tourist destination, and it's typically not recommended to visit for its own sake. It's the working center of the Comondú region, surrounded by irrigated farmland that supplies much of the state's produce, and it has very little in the way of sights, nightlife, or scenery. It's a quiet and pleasant town, but if you're looking for beaches, historic charm, or things to see and do, you'll find far more in Loreto, La Paz, or Todos Santos.

That said, there's one primary reason tourists might stop here. Every winter, gray whales migrate from Alaska to breed and give birth in the sheltered lagoons of Bahía Magdalena, and they're famously curious around small boats. From roughly January through March, licensed operators run whale-watching trips out of Puerto San Carlos and Puerto Adolfo López Mateos, both under an hour's drive from Constitución. The bay is also known for its mangrove channels, birdlife, and quiet, undeveloped beaches.

If whale watching is your goal, Constitución makes a practical and inexpensive overnight base, with basic hotels, a busy local market, and everyday restaurants where you can eat like a local. If it isn't, we'd suggest driving right through on the Transpeninsular Highway.

Good to know: Constitución is about two to three hours from La Paz and roughly two hours from Loreto. Book whale-watching tours through licensed local operators, and plan ahead, since the season is short.
