Isla Espíritu Santo

A protected island of red rock cliffs, turquoise coves, and sea lions, just offshore from La Paz.

Isla Espíritu Santo is the most famous island in the Sea of Cortez, and it's the top day trip from La Paz. Together with neighboring Isla Partida, it forms a national park and part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California. The islands are uninhabited, with layered red-and-orange volcanic cliffs, white-sand coves, and clear turquoise water that changes color throughout the day. Evidence of human presence here goes back thousands of years, and the island remains a rare, largely undeveloped stretch of coast.

Most visitors come for the wildlife and the water. The highlight is Los Islotes, a rocky outcrop at the northern tip of Isla Partida, home to a colony of California sea lions that are curious around snorkelers. On land, the island has its own endemic species, including a black jackrabbit found nowhere else, and seabirds like blue-footed boobies nest along the cliffs. Beaches such as Ensenada Grande and La Bonanza are good for snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, and short desert hikes, and some operators offer low-impact overnight camping.

There are no shops, restaurants, or permanent facilities on the island, so trips are organized through licensed operators in La Paz, and the boat ride takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour. Visitor numbers and activities are regulated to protect the ecosystem, so choose operators that follow park rules: keep your distance from wildlife, never touch or feed sea lions, use reef-safe sunscreen, and take all trash with you.

Good to know: The best conditions are roughly March through June, when the water is warm and calm. Summers are very hot, and boat trips can be canceled in strong winds or storms, especially in winter and during hurricane season. Bring water, sun protection, and cash for park fees.
