La Ventana
Baja's kiteboarding capital, a laid-back beach town on a wide, windy bay south of La Paz.
La Ventana sits on the East Cape about 45 minutes south of La Paz, on a broad, shallow bay with the desert mountains behind it and Isla Cerralvo rising offshore. It's one of the top kiteboarding and windsurfing destinations in Mexico, and from roughly November through March, steady afternoon winds fill the bay almost daily. Kite schools, wing-foil instructors, and rental shops make it easy for beginners to get started, and the shallow water is forgiving for learning. The town itself is small and relaxed, with beachfront cafés, casual restaurants, and a friendly crowd of kiters, expats, and repeat visitors.
Outside the windy season, the bay is calm and good for paddleboarding, snorkeling, and easy days on the water. A short drive south, the village of El Sargento shares the same wind and a quieter, more local feel. La Ventana also works well as a base for exploring the rest of the East Cape, with La Paz, Los Barriles, and Cabo Pulmo all within a day's reach.
Good to know: Wind season can be strong and gusty, so it's not ideal for swimmers or casual beachgoers. Summers are hot and practically windless, with subsequently calm water. A rental car is the easiest way to get around, and the town is just over an hour away from La Paz airport.
